ByeByeBamboo launched in Suffolk!

The call for bamboo removal services in Suffolk is at an all-time high. Here’s what went down, why bamboo is now a problem and why we’re launching the ByeByeBamboo campaign.

The backstory

It’s a quiet morning in our Long Melford office, an average Monday morning in November. Rain patters on the window. Olivia makes her first coffee of the day. It’s an easy round, the team are out on jobs.

As Olivia takes a sip the phone rings: a woman from Stowmarket. She’s worried. She’s just read all this stuff about how bamboo can grow through houses and the like and her garden’s full of it. Olivia offers to send a surveyor round the next day. Job done. She puts the phone down, but it rings again.

“Hello? TCM Soil Solutions”

“Hello, I’m in Ipswich, I’m wondering if you can help me? My neighbour’s got a tonne of bamboo in his garden. Is that a problem for us, should we be worried?”

Olivia finishes the call and pauses. That’s odd. It’s not that uncommon for people to ask us to remove bamboo, but nowhere near as often as Japanese knotweed or dangerous weeds like Giant Hogw---

Before she finishes the thought, the phone rings again. Another bamboo removal query, this one also in Ipswich. As soon as Olivia puts the phone down, she calls the managing director.

“Howard?”

“Yep?”

“You won’t believe this ...”

Why now?

So, how did we get here? Well ...

Invasive bamboo being a problem in the UK can be placed at the feet of gardeners in the late 80s, 90s and early 2000s. Good ol’ Alan Titchmarsh on Ground Force and Channel Four’s The City Gardener were among many to encourage British gardeners to plant bamboo. Years later, and the plant has had time to grow, to spread and flourish in our ever-warming climate and to infiltrate our homes.

Today, it may feel as though this bamboo scaremongering has happened overnight, as though a newspaper reporter woke up and thought “let’s make homeowners fear bamboo like they do knotweed!” That’s not, however, the complete truth.

Rumblings of concern over bamboo have been felt since 2023 if not before. Every spring and summer since then, the media have picked up on many of the scarier bamboo-related stories. For example, bamboo growing through conservatories or washing machines and ovens!

And yet, it was in November 2025, when the legal issues associated with bamboo really kicked the nation into action. When homeowners read that moving home could prove difficult and that their neighbours could sue them, the penny really dropped — bamboo needs to be removed!

What's wrong with bamboo?

Due to its strong, far-reaching roots, bamboo is capable of damaging patios, fences and boundary walls. You’re especially liable if running bamboo grows in your garden, as it might force you to pay for costly repairs, deal with disgruntled neighbours and face challenges from buyers when moving home. As if moving wasn’t challenging enough, right?

But worry no more! The team at TCM Soil Solutions have launched their ByeByeBamboo campaign in Suffolk to get bamboo removed for good!

Why bamboo removal in Suffolk?

There has been a rise in bamboo removal cases in Suffolk recently. Of all the areas we cover, Suffolk seems to be especially troubled by running bamboo. Perhaps it’s because we get more sun than other counties.

Perhaps, when it was trendy to plant bamboo in the early 2000s, Suffolk gardeners didn't hold back. Or, perhaps, as Howard Downer sees it: Suffolk is just the best!
