Bamboo (Bambusoideae) is a fast-growing evergreen grass that was introduced to Europe in the early 19th century as an ornamental plant. With over 1,400 species worldwide, bamboo comes in a range of colours, shapes and sizes and remains widely sold in UK garden centres.
Although attractive and popular in gardens, bamboo spreads aggressively underground via an extensive root system. In the UK, the running variety in particular has become an increasing problem for homeowners and commercial landowners alike.
Why is bamboo a problem? If left unmanaged, bamboo can cause significant structural damage and costly repair bills. Its underground rhizomes exploit weaknesses in:
Bamboo has even been known to grow through ovens and washing machines!
Beyond physical damage, bamboo encroachment can lead to disputes between neighbours. Cases involving spreading bamboo are becoming more common across the UK, particularly where running bamboo has crossed property boundaries.
There is also the wider environmental concern, as uncontrolled bamboo can suppress native flora and impact local biodiversity.
Effective management requires a structured and specialist approach.
Getting rid of bamboo is not straightforward. Garden tools and off-the-shelf weed killers are rarely effective, and the majority of the plant exists underground. In fact, incorrect methods of removal can make the problem worse by stimulating further spread.
TCM Soil Solutions have over twenty years' experience dealing with invasive vegetation. Our scientific approach means we understand that herbicides alone will not eradicate bamboo.
The only reliable long-term solution is excavation. Though this may seem like a major undertaking, it remains the fastest and most effective method of permanently removing bamboo. We fully excavate the rhizome network and install professional root barriers to prevent future spread and protect your property or development site.
There are two main types of bamboo commonly found in the UK:
All bamboo spreads underground, but running bamboo poses the greatest risk.
(Full species guidance is available on our separate bamboo identification page).
Running bamboo spreads through an extensive underground rhizome system. New shoots are produced from these horizontal roots and push up through soil, developing into woody canes.
Even small fragments of retained rhizome can regenerate, which is why partial removal often leads to recurrence.
Despite its invasive behaviour, bamboo is not currently listed as an invasive species under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. There are no restrictions on its sale, purchase or planting.
However, encroachment cases are increasing. Homeowners and businesses may be held liable if bamboo spreads onto neighbouring land and causes damage.
TCM Soil Solutions believe bamboo may become the next Japanese knotweed in terms of public awareness and legal scrutiny. Our professional advice is simple: avoid planting running bamboo and remove existing infestations as early as possible.
